7 Ways of Making a Move Less Stressful

The process of moving can take a toll on you both physically, and mentally, so it’s important to try and stay as relaxed as possible. You want your move to be a happy and welcome change, not a dreaded one. So take a deep breath and take a look at these 7 tips to make your move with the least stress possible.

  1. Start Packing ASAP
Of all tips to make moving less stressful, this one is definitely one of the most important. As soon as you know for sure that you are moving, start packing! If you start packing little by little, it will leave you enough time to sort through your belongings and get rid of some of the things you no longer need. By doing this, you will have less clutter and easier time unpacking. This will also prevent the panic of last minute packing.
  2. Pack an Overnight Bag
To make your last night at your old place and first night at your new place less hectic, we recommend using an overnight bag. This should contain everything you usually pack on an overnight trip, such as your everyday bathroom necessities, PJs, and a change of clothes. This way you are’t stressing over finding the things you need right when you need them.
  3. Don’t Buy Boxes
Moving usually puts a strain on finances by itself so don’t spend even more money on moving supplies! Try going to your local convenience stores as well as grocery/hardware stores to see if they have any extra boxes or moving supplies. Also, don’t forget to ask if you can take extra boxes from your own office if there is any. Run by some local dollar stores for tape, labeling markers, and any other packing supplies you may need for half the cost.
  4. Hire Professional Movers
If you really want to lower the stress during your move, then spend the extra cash to hire some movers. Make sure to do some research and get quotes from several different moving companies in order to get the lowest price possible. If you don’t have the money for professional movers, then ask some of your family and friends if they would be willing to help out. The more people you have helping your move, the less stressful it will be!
  5. Plan a Spa Day
Use moving as an excuse to plan a day at the spa, salon, or any other place that makes you feel good! Try to plan one day during your final week of packing and then one day during your first week of unpacking. It’s great to break up the stress of the move at the moments when you need it most!
  6. Notify Everyone of Your Move
Make a list of utilities and people at both locations that need to be notified of your moving date. Then, make sure to check off each as you contact them. Make sure to remember to change magazine subscriptions, your billing address, and any retail stores than you enjoy getting coupons from. Also, don’t forget to file your change of address with the post office at least a week before you move.
  7. Start Room Planning
It’s always a good idea to start room planning as soon as you know you will be moving. If you don’t already know what kind of place you will be moving to, then start with things like color schemes or themes. Create a board on Pinterest (We also have a team page here that you can follow for different room ideas/diy’s) or a collage from magazine cutouts. The best part of moving is getting a fresh start, so why not design your rooms a new way?

Throughout your moving chaos, just remember how happy you will be once you are settled into your new home. Moving is a great excuse to start fresh, so make sure to take full advantage of it by getting rid of the old and making way for the new!
